Inter Milan are weighing up making an emergency signing in defense, with Francesco Acerbi still struggling with injury.
This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews. They report that the Nerazzurri could turn to the market in the next couple weeks.
Acerbi’s situation has become a delicate one in the last couple months.
The former Lazio and Sassuolo defender has suffered two thigh strains this season.
The most recent came in November. Initially, this was only projected to sideline Acerbi for a couple weeks.
However, the 36-year-old was on the sidelines for more than two months.
Acerbi was finally able to return to a matchday squad for Wednesday’s Serie A clash with Bologna.
However, the Italian international was an unused substitute for that match.
And now, Acerbi is yet again working on personalized training. There is a sense that he still hasn’t shaken off the physical problem, and could be a doubt to face Empoli this weekend.
Inter Ponder Emergency Signing Amid Francesco Acerbi Uncertainty
All of this has caused Inter to lose their sense of certainty around Acerbi.
The 36-year-old is one of two players in the Nerazzurri squad who can play in the centre of a back three.
And if Acerbi’s availability is in doubt for the reason of the season that would be a massive blow for Inter’s squad depth in defense.
This is hardly an ideal situation. Inter will be fighting on multiple fronts for the next few months.
Therefore, the Gazzetta report, the Nerazzurri could be forced to react. They could turn to the transfer market this month.
Inter have not been planning to make any signings during the January transfer window.
However, Acerbi’s situation may leave them with few other options.
