Legendary Italian coach Fabio Capello believes Inter Milan have what it takes to stun Barcelona in the Champions League semi-finals.

The Nerazzurri have been enjoying a superb European run this season. They finished the group stage fourth out of 36 participants, conceding a single goal in eight outings.

Despite their early exploits, the Italian champions were the underdogs against Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals. Nevertheless, they managed to overcome the odds to beat the Bavarian giants 4-3 on aggregate.

Inter have now booked a meeting with the high-flying Barcelona whom many consider as the ultimate favourites to clinch the big-eared trophy. For Capello, the Blaugrana are indeed a stern test for Inter. However, the 78-year-old believes the Nerazzurri have enough quality and character to pull off another upset.

“After Bayern, Barcelona awaits. It’s the Champions League, baby, at certain altitudes you can’t expect to live easily,” noted the former England, Milan and Real Madrid manager in his column on La Gazzetta dello Sport via FcInterNews.

“But Inter have shown that they don’t suffer from vertigo. The semi-final against the Blaugrana will be another top-level challenge, complicated for sure, but not impossible.”

Fabio Capello Explains How Inter Milan Can Beat Barcelona

Capello also explained how Barcelona are beginning to drift away from their traditional Spanish style.

“Flick’s team has great quality, important individuals and plays a less Spanish style of football than in the past.

“The German coach, in fact, loves verticality more than ball possession at all costs. He demands suffocating pressure from his players. When they lose the ball, Barça immediately bites your ankles to win it back.

“This is their strength, but paradoxically also the origin of their fragility. Because if the pressure goes in vain, they are vulnerable at the back.”

Capello also urges Simone Inzaghi to study Barcelona 4-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund in the first leg.

“Inzaghi should take the first leg against Dortmund as a reference point. BVB lost clearly in the score at the Olimpico in Barcelona, but they still exposed the defensive weaknesses of the home team.

Inter will clearly have to be more solid than the Germans – and they certainly are – but they will be able to take inspiration from the way BVB counterattacks.

“The secret, as I mentioned, is to get past the high pressure. There will be spaces and Lautaro and Thuram will have to be good at exploiting them.”
