Stefan de Vrij has won praise for a solid defensive display for Inter Milan in yesterday’s 1-0 Serie A win over Hellas Verona.

Today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, commend the Dutchman for keeping striker Amin Sarr quiet and tidying up in Inter’s penalty area.

Defender Stefan de Vrij got the start for Inter Milan against Hellas Verona yesterday.

The 33-year-old was one of ten changes that Nerazzurri coach Simone Inzaghi made to the starting eleven for the match.

It was clear that the Inter coach was focusing heavily on the second leg against Barcelona in the Champions League.

However, that meant that the Nerazzurri had to really rely on their “second string” to secure a win that would keep the pressure on Napoli in the Serie A title race.

In the view of the Gazzetta, de Vrij proved that he is not merely a backup to Francesco Acerbi.

The former Lazio and Feyenoord defender really stepped up.

Wearing the captain’s armband, and as the most experienced player in the lineup, de Vrij really showed his reliability.

De Vrij had the task of marking Hellas Verona striker Amin Sarr. The Swede has proven a key player in attack for the Gialloblu, as his physicality has made him quite difficult to keep out of matches.

However, that was no problem for Stefan de Vrij.

The Dutchman used his size, strength, and reading of the game to get the better of Sarr time and time again.

Then, when Daniel Mosquera came on for Verona, it was very much the same story. De Vrij kept the substitute out of the game as well.
