Beppe Marotta says that Simone Inzaghi decided to leave Inter Milan “the day after” the Champions League final against PSG.
The Nerazzurri President spoke at the Festival della Serie A, via FCInterNews. He also stated that Cristian Chivu is “the right profile” to take over as Nerazzurri coach.
Simone Inzaghi decided to leave Inter Milan this week.
The 49-year-old left the Nerazzurri after four years at the helm. He decided to join Al-Hilal rather than remaining at the San Siro.
Inzaghi’s exit came just a couple of days after the Champions League final. That match saw Inter suffered an historic 5-0 loss at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain.
Marotta: “Inzaghi Decided To Leave Inter The Day After 5-0 Loss To PSG”

Inter President Beppe Marotta commented that “in football, if you win you’re good.”
“And if you lose, much less so.”
“There’s a bitter taste in everyone’s mouth over the debacle seven days ago,” Marotta admitted. “But that’s a part of football.”
“Coming second is not a failure, but a source of pride,” said the Inter President. “Because reaching the final of the Champions League, the biggest club competition, is extraordinary.”
“And it’s even more extraordinary to have done it twice in three years. We have to look at that as well.”
“Tue, there’s bitterness and deep disappointment,” Marotta said.
“But I’d firmly say that our season – which isn’t over yet because there’s the Club World Cup, which we’re representing Italy in along with Juve, is a source of pride.”
“Football is a world where everything burns out very quickly,” Marotta noted.
“But on Tuesday, Inzaghi told us: ‘My Inter cycle is over, I prefer to have a new experience.'”
“Many will say that we could have seen this coming,” Marotta said. “But that’s not the case.”
“Because the approach to the final caused us not to touch upon that topic in the previous week.”
“And I’ll say this with equal frankness,” the Inter President went on. “Inzaghi made the decision only on the Monday after the loss to PSG.”
“Reading the newspaper there’s talk of skepticism and confusion. But we simply took the decision, which found us only partly prepared, because there was no certainty he’d leave.”
Marotta Calls Chivu “The Right Profile” For Inter Milan

As far as Inter’s search for a new coach goes, Marotta said that “the newspapers suggested many different names.”
“But all with completely different profiles,” he noted.
The Inter President stated that “the first thing that has to be identified when changing coaches is the profile.”
He called this “the consequence of strategy and guidelines.”
“After the ownership outlined has the strategy, then you look to find the right profile,” Marotta said.
“We needed a young coach, who fully embraces the guidelines of the club. And who implements a project that gets the best out of the youth team players.”
“Inter are a big club and have the obligation to participate in competitions, and try to win,” said the Inter President. “For that, a lot of qualities are necessary.”
“Qualities that we felt were there in the case of Chivu. I can’t make that official yet, because there’s a bureaucratic aspect regarding him still being registered to Parma thtat we still have to deal with.”
“But we’ll finalize it with him.”
Marotta insisted that Cristian Chivu “is the right profile for the objectives I’ve listed.”
“It’s not confusion,” the Inter President said of the club’s strategy. “But a form of courage, inherent in leaders.”
“The important thing is that there’s a strong club, a strong leadership, and a well-defined project,” Marotta concluded.
Chivu will have the next competition to actually get to know what he can do with the squad. He must make a good impression and Inter must sign decent players not deadweight like Correa, Taremi and Arna. It’s crazy to think Inter actually reached the final with only Thuram and Lautaro playing as the main attacking players all season.
remember, Chivu is not Stramaccioni, I prefer him over Fabregas, unless inter recruits kloop or zidane, I actually don’t like Inzaghi’s player selection, he rarely uses young players, modern coaches nowadays, always choose young players who have speed and good dribbling, and Inzaghi never does that.
I will support Chivu. As long as we have Marotta as president.. i trust him. Forza inter!
I wont pretend that i didnt expect us to get a manager with at least more experiance if not a world class one.
Honestly after talk of Inzaghi leaving started, i expected some bigger names to be linked with us.
With all that said , at least Chivu looks like a talented coach and since it is him i will suport him. He does only have what 13 games behind him but most were against top teams in serie A and he didnt lose a single one.
I guess time will tell, i hope we secure CL next season without much problems , that would be my minimum.
All the best to Chivu , i hope he can achive similar succes with us as a manager as he did as a player 🙂
Well said
We are always quick to judge, who believed Inzaghi would be this good with us, with lazio he was a regular coach at best, Chivu is an inter Legend, let’s all rally behind him and support him, wish him all the best, he would be our pep and people will be surprised and ashamed
I do genuinely believe that Marotta was caught off guard by Inzaghis departure… if he’d have seen it coming, I think we’d be watching Allegri-Ball next season, and then people on here would have had a real reason to bitch and moan!!
I also think that one of the reasons Inzaghi left was because of Oaktrees well published strategy going forward… Inzaghi simply doesn’t trust young players, and probably wasn’t the right coach to carry out that sort of project….
As for all the doomsday merchants on here, who absolutely love to dwell on misery and negativity, I have absolutely no interest in any of your opinions….
Christian Chivu is an Inter legend!! A treble winner!! The disrespect being shown towards him on here is disgusting, but not surprising…. He deserves a chance to show what he can do! He won the title with our Primevera team, and knows how to coach young players! Older players will respect him- it doesn’t matter how much Martinez, Bastoni, Barella etc have wom with this club- Chivu has won more!!!
If Barcelona had shared the attitude of certain people on here, then the likes of Pep and Luis Enrique wouldn’t be managers now, and they didn’t do too badly, coming in as rookies, did they?? It could work with Chivu, or it could fail, but he deserves a chance, and I am excited to try something different!! Let’s try to build a team with an average age under 45, and see what happens!!
Good luck Christian!! True Interisti will be behind you!!!
well thought out…
Thanks!
Thanks for the positivity, buddy.
I believe the Serie A competition will still be balanced between the big six next season, in term of the squad. No team will be dominant. Only Napoli have the same coach, but they will compete in UCL as well. I hope the squad will turn the pain of UCL final into a hunger next season. Top four is still much possible.
Very well said… I can’t agree more.
I think, as a club we need to take a step back and understand that not every season is going to be scudetto challenge. We need to build a philosophy and stick to it and a long term coach with deep ties to the club is essential for that.
Even if it takes us a couple of seasons to align our playing styles, club strategy and leadership goals etc. we should go for it and take the risks.
And Chivu is the right profile, as long as he delivers reasonable results in these buildup seasons. I am not expecting a Scudetto or CL final next year, but as long as we play respectfully and give it a challenge in both the major competitions, we are headed in the right direction.
If we end up in Serie top-4 and go until last-16 in CL. We should not panic, and let the coach and club do their work.
Exactly right!! A new era begins!! Let’s embrace it and see where it takes us!!
At some point I would like to see Chivu deploy a 4 back like he did with the primavera/start of his stint at Parma. I think the current players warrant a 3 back to start as they have been accustomed to playing it, but a 4 back is less physically demanding and we saw our players completely gas out in March. We have lost 3 finals playing 3 back in the last 5 years we need a more modern formation and playstyle with young legs.
From Italian league, maybe the best option except maybe Italiano. We knew that management won’t buy out some experienced and good coach, cause they’re cheap. Hopefully it’ll work out for him and for us. Maybe he’ll push more our youth players, we have some solid ones, who have potential to be future star players (both Stankovic, younger Esposito, Carboni).
Indeed
wow. nice said mate!
