Inter Milan coach Cristian Chivu could reportedly move towards a 4-3-2-1 formation with the signing of Manuel Akanji.
This according to today’s print edition of Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, via FCInter1908.
Inter Milan coach Cristian Chivu has made it fairly clear that he intends to change the formation this season.
In Inter’s first two matches of the Serie A season, the Nerazzurri have lined up in the familiar 3-5-2 shape.
That is the formation that the team still know best. And it is also the system that best suits the players in the squad.
However, Chivu has already been experimenting with a 3-4-2-1 shape since the Club World Cup.
Furthermore, the Romanian went with a back-four shape while chasing the game against Udinese.
Chivu Could Use 4-3-2-1 Shape At Inter With Akanji

What seems clear is that Chivu wants an attacking midfielder to play behind the strikers.
That is a role that the coach envisions for Davide Frattesi.
And this is why Chivu has been orienting towards a 3-4-2-1 shape.
However, an alternative would be to play with a midfield trio, and also have Frattesi on the pitch as an attacking midfielder.
This would look something like a 4-3-1-2 shape, or Carlo Ancelotti’s famous 4-3-2-1 “Christmas tree” formation.
The problem is that Inter’s defenders have always suited a back-three defense best. Therefore, changing to a back-four would be tricky.
However, Tuttosport suggest, the arrival of Manuel Akanji from Manchester City could change that.
Akanji is a player very familiar with playing in a centre-back pairing.
Furthermore, the player who Akanji replaces, Benjamin Pavard, has been a real back three specialist.
Therefore, Tuttosport argue, Akanji could allow Chivu to use a back four with Akanji and Bastoni as the two centre-backs.
I’d welcome a back 4!! Akanji and Bastoni has the potential to be a great pairing!! Dumfries is set at rb, and then you have the attacking or defending options on the left between DiMarco and Augusto…
You can then find space for Frattesi behind the strikers, and between Thuram, Bonny and Henrique you have the flexibility to switch if you want to go wide…. I like it!!
A lot of the comments on here I’m beginning to agree with after years of complaining that we needed a change. It’s as if I barely need to comment anymore. I can finally say we’re starting to wake up to change and a new reality. We need to bring back the joy of watching Inter play and not just for the results.
4321 formation compatible with Chivu strategy. He focus play in the middle, rarely use wide field.
With 4321 Sacchi really give how to pressure effectively. When opponent keeper have ball, you man marking their midfielder, the keeper will pass ball to opponent middle centre back, opponent middle centre back will pass to left/right defender, left/right will pass to left/right midfielder. Thats when you pressure, forward will press centre back, midfielder will press opponent midfielder, just leave the other side opponent wide defender.
4-2-3-1 will suit best with this set 8f players. Dumfries as RB ala Maicon. Sucic and Barella in front of Defence to help them and to start and to counter attack. Frattesi between Lautato and Dimarco and Thuram right up there.
Best balanced team in this way
The said formation won’t ve a wing attackers we ll try to attack from the midfielders and it’s easy to defend
I think this would be a good change for the future. the 3 back does work but has so much limitations when it comes to offensive options. Having to use wingbacks to not being able to have wing forwards to needing 3 midfielders and so forth
it might give more space for fullback such as dimarco/agusto and dumfries to exploit, while players like fratessi/thuram to get between the midfield and defence line.
Exactly ck!
