The future and role of midfielder Davide Frattesi at Inter Milan could depend on how well summer signing Andy Diouf adjusts.

This according to Italian journalist Pasquale Guarro, via FCInter1908. He reports that Diouf settling into a holding midfield role could be essential for facilitating Frattesi playing in a front three.

Inter midfielder Davide Frattesi is reportedly a player who coach Cristian Chivu wants to reintegrate into the plans.

The 25-year-old was not a regular starter under Simone Inzaghi. This was the result of a tactical mismatch, as Frattesi never really suited the ex-Lazio coach’s 3-5-2 formation.

However, Chivu has reportedly been aiming to change the shape. He has been working on trying to implement a 3-4-2-1 formation.

Future Of Frattesi At Inter Could Depend On Inter

According to Pasquale Guarro, the fact that Inter didn’t sign either Ademola Lookman or Manu Kone this summer is something of a hurdle to their switching to a 3-4-2-1 formation.

Those were players that Chivu felt would facilitate the transition to a new shape.

Kone in particular would have had the right profile to play in a two-man midfield. The Frenchman can cover significant ground in support of the forward players.

Furthermore, Kone is a player adept at keeping possession of the ball and moving it up the pitch.

That would have mitigated those responsibilities for Frattesi, who has never exactly thrived deeper on the pitch.

However, after missing out on Kone, Inter moved for Lens midfielder Andy Diouf.

Diouf is not really a player who has shown that he can play as an out-and-out holding midfielder the way that Kone has at Roma.

However, given the 22-year-old’s size and physical attributes, Chivu appears to want to use him as a holding midfielder eventually.

If Diouf can adjust to the demands of that position, it would allow Frattesi to play behind the striker.

However, as long as Inter continue to play with a midfield trio, it could make it hard for Frattesi to find a place in the team.
