During his post-match conference via FCInterNews, El Toro hailed La Albiceleste’s successful qualifying campaign despite a rare setback.
An ill-tempered fixture in Guayaquil saw both teams reduced to ten men inside the opening hour of play.
Indeed, Argentina lost veteran center-back Nicolas Otamendi to a straight red card midway through the first half.
Furthermore, Ecuador seized the numerical advantage, taking the lead on the stroke of halftime through Enner Valencia.
Despite boasting 57% possession, Lionel Scaloni’s side finished the game without a single shot on target.
As a result, they suffered their fourth defeat in the current qualifying cycle.
However, it didn’t affect their final standing as they topped the South American group, finishing nine points clear of second-placed Ecuador.

Inter Milan captain Lautaro Martinez spearheaded Argentina’s attack last night.
However, it was a frustrating game for the 28-year-old as he never had a clear sight of goal.
Despite La Albiceleste’s disjointed performance, El Toro hailed their overall spirit and commitment.
“There’s a bit of frustration about the result and the sending-off,” he said.
“In every training session and match, we try to give our best to keep Argentina as high as possible.
“We’re finishing the qualifiers at the top, which is very important for us,” Lautaro continued.

“Now we have some friendlies to prepare in the best possible way for the World Cup.”

Though Otamendi left his team high and dry, Lautaro supported his senior colleague after the game.

“He’s from the previous generation and is enjoying this moment. We’ve learned a lot from him,” El Toro stated.
He must now shift his focus toward Saturday’s titanic clash against Juventus.
