Inter Milan president Giuseppe Marotta has said that the city of Milan “needs a new, modern stadium”, after San Siro was deemed not suitable to host the Champions League final or feature on Italy’s Euro 2032 venue list.

Marotta was present on the stage of the Aula Magna at the University of Milan-Bicocca today.

The Inter president was presented with an honorary master’s degree for his contributions to sport and to the city of Milan.

With quotes via FCInterNews, Marotta took some time to discuss the ongoing saga surrounding San Siro.

“With sensitivity and intelligence,” the Italian said, “I hope the administrators can understand that the city needs a new, modern stadium.”

On Monday, Milan City Council are set to reconvene.

They will cast a vote on whether to approve the sale of the historic stadium and surround land to Inter and Milan.

“I hope there will be no obstacles,” Marotta said, “everything must be done with the utmost transparency.”

“I hope that this long-standing problem will be resolved as soon as possible,” he concluded.

Earlier this week, Inter and Milan announced the architectural firms responsible for designing the new stadium.

The clubs confirmed an agreement with firms MANICA and Foster + Partners.

However, if the vote is not passed on Monday, it will be back to square one.

The Rossoneri may consider an alternative move to their San Donato site.

Furthermore, early reports suggested that Inter could follow them.

However, the clubs are reportedly close to an expect majority in the vote.

Therefore, it seems likely a new stadium will be built on the site of San Siro.
