Inter legend Beppe Bergomi believes the Champions League defeat to Liverpool exposed two structural problems in Cristian Chivu’s side.

Speaking on Sky Sport, via FCInter1908, Bergomi highlighted the lack of rotation between Serie A and European fixtures.

Bergomi noted that “it surprised me, because Inter have the highest average age, and compared to the match with Como, they made just one change against Liverpool.”

He added that the early injuries only compounded the issue.

“After 20 minutes against Liverpool they were forced to make two changes. You have to have courage, you have to dare if you want to go far in all competitions.”

Bergomi suggested that the intensity required at the top European level left the Nerazzurri exposed, particularly when Liverpool raised the tempo in the second half.

The former captain also pointed to Inter’s physical limitations.

“Inter don’t have fast players, so they can’t play on the counter-attack and are forced to defend deep,” he said. “It’s a team with the highest average age, and that shows when you concede goals in the final minutes.”

Despite the concerns, Bergomi acknowledged that Inter are still following the expected development path.

“Inter could have had two more points after Atletico and Liverpool, but they’re doing the journey they needed to,” he explained, underlining the fine margins in elite European competition.
