Inter Milan have reportedly earmarked Sassuolo defender Tarik Muharemovic as a potential replacement for Stefan de Vrij.

According to Corriere dello Sport via FCInterNews, the Nerazzurri will pursue the Bosnian’s services if De Vrij leaves the club in January.

Stefan de Vrij has entered the final six months of his contract at San Siro.

With Inter hesitant to offer him fresh terms, the 33-year-old is likely to depart the Nerazzurri at the end of the season.

However, the Dutchman is desperate to feature in next summer’s FIFA World Cup and might request a transfer in January.

De Vrij has been a marginal figure in Cristian Chivu’s system, making just eight appearances in all competitions this season.

Therefore, it’s barely surprising that he has grown frustrated with his current status at Giuseppe Meazza.

Furthermore, the former Lazio center-back is contemplating his future at Inter, prompting the club to search for alternatives.

Tarik Muharemovic ticks many of the boxes for the type of player Inter would like to replace De Vrij.

As such, he’d be the favorite to step in as De Vrij’s long-term successor at the heart of Inter’s defense.
