Referee Federico La Penna could face a lengthy suspension after the controversial second yellow card shown to Pierre Kalulu during Inter Milan’s 3-2 win over Juventus.
The incident, which heavily influenced the Derby d’Italia, sparked immediate protests.
La Penna booked Kalulu for a challenge on Alessandro Bastoni, despite replays suggesting minimal contact.
Kalulu reacted furiously and gestured for a VAR review, but current regulations do not allow VAR to intervene on second yellow cards.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInter1908, the mistake became even clearer on replay, with the newspaper arguing that Kalulu was wrongly punished.
Inter 3-2 Juventus – La Penna Error Marred Impressive Victory

The controversy continued in the tunnel at halftime, where protests followed the decision.
The case has reignited debate over VAR protocol.
During a recent meeting in London on January 20, International Football Association Board (IFAB) discussed allowing video officials to review second yellow cards that result in dismissals.
Under the proposed change, VAR could recommend overturning a clearly erroneous second booking, though it would not have authority to suggest one.
Had the rule already been in force, La Penna could have conducted an on-field review.
The yellow card for Kalulu might have been rescinded, with Bastoni instead facing punishment for simulation, which would have resulted in his own dismissal.
Ref killed the game, not only this call. He was poor all over
His hand goes up to grab Bastoni and prevent a counter. Is the call debatable? Yes. That’s the problem. Don’t put yourself in the position to obstruct a counter.
This referee then started calling invisible fouls for the rest of the game to make up for it. It is poor refereeing AND a defender putting himself in the position of a second yellow. Keep your hands to yourself, no controversy.
have you read and understood IFAB rules? get it, man!
Fans shall be smart.
Invisible fouls? Inter were granted two penalties not called for in addition to the red card.
That was a clear yellow card offense, minimal or not. It was up to the ref not to give it. I rooted for Juve, but, can’t complain about that. Most refs give a yellow for that, so, punishing this one because Juve lost, is injustice.
They pretend that it wasn’t an attempt to stop a counter attack and they also pretend that refs sometimes gives yellow card in similar situations for simply blocking a counter attack situation. They’re angry that Bastoni reacted with a dive and not the hand extension from Kalulu even tho he knew he was on a yellow
the sad thing is that almost times you are watch a good and very competitive match, it’s like one demon comes and possess the referees and tell to make a decision that makes them the talking point and centre of attraction instead of the players and I say this regardless of the teams involved and beneficiaries. it’s a global pandemic that is yet to be cured.
well said very well said and Kalulu did displace Bastoni just enough to make him loose his balance. When on a run at a speed all U need is just a tiny push
If that rule comes in..:rube will relegate
they robbed us in the first leg
robbed us in 2018 Vecino red card and Raphina foul
now they get a taste from their own cup
Don’t forget Perisic penalty for Cuadrado a serial diver
