Inter Milan could be on the lookout for a new goalkeeper in the summer, with Yann Sommer potentially heading out the door.
Inter Milan have been blessed with a strong goalkeeper for years now. Andre Onana shone following his move from Ajax, playing a starring role in the Nerazzurri’s run to the 2023 UEFA Champions League final.
Following his blockbuster €55m move to Manchester United shortly thereafter, the San Siro outfit punted for veteran Yann Sommer, with the club forking out just €6m to secure his services, banking a huge profit in the process.
Sommer’s Downturn in Form
The Swiss shot-stopper was initially a revelation. Throughout his first two years with the club, he helped Inter claim the Scudetto and reach another Champions League final.
Inter seem well on their way to further Serie A glory this season, with both the current standings and the latest online betting odds indicating that the title is near. Christian Chivu’s men currently sit eight points clear of cross-city rivals AC Milan, prompting the popular soccer betting at Bovada service to slash odds on them winning the Scudetto again this term down to a mightily short 1/12.
But despite the impending title, Sommer has still had plenty of criticism levied against him throughout the course of the season.
Mistakes against Milan, Arsenal, and Pisa have all had disastrous consequences, with outlets such as La Gazzetta Dello Sport calling the latter of those three blunders inexcusable.
With his performance downturn in mind and Sommer now 37 years of age, it’s highly unlikely that he will have his contract, which expires in the summer, renewed and remain Inter’s number one next season.
As such, the Nerazzurri will be requiring a replacement to take over between the sticks. So, who should that man be? Let’s take a look at the candidates.
Guglielmo Vicario
Inter have made no secret of who their number one target is this summer: Guglielmo Vicario.
The Tottenham Hotspur number one was an instant revelation following his arrival from Serie A outfit Empoli. His sharp reflexes, impeccable shot-stopping, and ability to play with the ball at his feet endeared him to the North London faithful.
The relationship reached a peak as Spurs won last season’s Europa League title, the Italian goalkeeper playing a starring role in the 1-0 triumph against Manchester United in Bilbao.
However, this season, the relationship has turned sour. Spurs are mired in a relegation dogfight, a scarcely believable position given their European success last term and their status as one of the Premier League’s so-called “Big Six.”
Igor Tudor’s men currently sit just one point clear of the drop zone and haven’t won a league game since December 28th. While all of the current Spurs squad have come in for criticism, Vicario is one of the players who is shouldering more than most.
The Italian shot-stopper has saved just 62.7% of the shots he’s faced so far this season, conceding a whopping 47 goals, the second most in the entire league.
His -4.39 goals prevented figure suggests that he should have saved at least four of the goals he has conceded this term and is a damning indictment of his efforts. Still, that hasn’t put off several Italian and indeed European clubs.
Inter are known admirers, as are their archrivals, Juventus. French outfit Monaco are also thought to be on the prowl, and those three could be about to embark upon a Mexican standoff in a race for Vicario’s signature.
At least he will almost certainly be available for a cut-price deal should Spurs fall through the trap door to the Championship this season.
Mile Svilar
Roma goalkeeper Mile Svilar is also someone that Inter are rumored to be interested in. However, unlike Vicario in North London, the Serbian goalkeeper is a beloved figure at the Stadio Olimpico.
The 26-year-old initially joined from Benfica as backup to Rui Patrício in the summer of 2022; however, he has since claimed the starting role for himself and has shone in it.
Svilar has kept 12 clean sheets so far this season, the third-highest number in the league. If that wasn’t impressive enough, he has also racked up a mighty 86 saves, with only Ivan Provedel and Marco Carnesecchi managing more from goalkeepers in the top half of the table.
The Roma number one has become a commanding presence in the box under Gian Piero Gasperini this term, and that is something Inter has been sorely missing during the fall of Sommer.
Forcing through a deal for the Serbian, however, could be much more difficult than a move for Vicario. His cult hero-like status in Rome would mean that Inter has to pay a premium, especially as a direct divisional rival.
As such, that could make Tottenham’s man more appealing of the two if Juve or Monaco do not beat Inter to his signature. Fans will have to wait to see how this unfolds.
