Inter Milan goalkeeper Josep Martinez is reportedly facing a decisive tail-end of the 2025/26 season amid an uncertain future at San Siro.
According to Gazzetta dello Sport via FCInterNews, the Spaniard must convince the San Siro hierarchy he deserves a place between the sticks.
Signed from Genoa in the summer of 2024, Josep Martinez has had a bit-part role at Inter over the past two years.
Indeed, the 27-year-old has had to settle for playing second fiddle to veteran goalkeeper Yann Sommer.
Despite splashing out almost €15 million to secure his services, Inter have not trusted Martinez with a regular starting role.
Inter Milan Star Josep Martinez Faces Pivotal Season Ending
Martinez, who was involved in a tragic car accident last year, has made just three Serie A starts in 2025/26.
However, Cristian Chivu has made the former RB Leipzig shot-stopper his first option in the Coppa Italia this term.
Furthermore, the player repaid the 45-year-old’s trust with a scintillating performance in Tuesday’s semi-final victory over Como.
Therefore, it’s reasonable to assume that Martinez will start between the sticks when Inter face Lazio in the Coppa Italia final.
In fact, the upcoming showdown at the Stadio Olimpico could determine the Spaniard’s future at San Siro.
Management should come out boldly and tell the fans why Martinez is not the first choice keeper over aging Sommer. This cannot be a sporting reason as all the fans agrees he deserves to be a starter, maybe it’s a contractual issue or something else outside sporting reason. I will not be surprised if Sommer is still the number 1 choice next season.
Chivu was referring to the accident in which a man over 80 lost his life. That really takes a toll on you mentally! Peppo needs some time to recover psychologically and get his focus back on the game! Which he seems to have managed to do now.
In any case, I think it’s normal for something like that to slow you down.
Really? Even before that accident, Chivu didn’t trust him to play more games
