Hugo Campagnaro was a guest at the Inter sponsors Oknoplast’s presentation at MADE Expo 2013, and among the journalists in attendance were correspondents from our partner fcinternews.it who reported what the defender had to say.

The match against Roma will be very important: How do tackle it? And above all, you have been one of the best players at the start of this season. Is it because you know Mazzarri?

“Yes, I’d say it partly is because I work with him so I know the movements and this is an advantage compared to the others. It must be said that everyone does an excellent job. Now we meet Roma, a tough challenge against a team that plays very well and allows very little. Then we’ll see, we’ll summarize afterwards but we will play our game.”

Mazzarri has also managed to revitalize Ricardo Alvarez. Do you expect that this will be the season when things turn around for him?

“Yes, Ricky is a very good player and has several impressive technical qualities. Last year, perhaps he had a poor season but this year he gives one hundred percent and makes the difference in all matches. We hope he continues like this, we need him. He can ensure that we take additional steps when it comes to quality.”

Inter’s defense concedes fewer goals. Is it because Campagnaro has taught the movements to his teammates or is it Mazzarri who has developed Ranocchia and Juan Jesus?

“He is the one who teaches the movements. The three-man defense can be played well or badly, and this year we have done it really good, we allow little. We conceded more than we deserved and this is a sign that things are going well.”

We are only in the sixth round , but do you think Inter can get into the discussion about the Scudetto?

“I would say that Juventus and Roma have something more in their squads in terms of number and quality. We are working well, but after six rounds, you can’t say anything. We are one step behind but we can replace that with sacrifice. I don’t say that we can challenge them but we can have a good championship.”

How many teams are in front of Inter right now?

“Right now there are three, that’s what the table says. If we continue like this, we can do well, they have more reserves and quality, but we could have something to say.”

Had you expected this kind of start to the season on a personal level?

” No, at first I was intrigued, especially after training camp, perhaps because the results were not so thrilling. But the teams were strong and our retreat different. Then we started well and I wasn’t expecting that, we hope to continue like this.”

The correspondent from fcinternews.it asked Campagnaro if he was happy that Mauro Icardi was called to the Argentine national team:

How do you explain the troubles Milan and Juventus are having in the Champions League?

“I don’t think it’s normal, especially Juve can do more because they have quality in their squad and a great coach. They have done worse than they deserve.”

And how much do you and Inter want to return to the Champions League?

“The desire is very big, to return after a bad season would be very important. We hope to do well to get back there next year.”
