Wingback Federico Dimarco has been named as the outstanding performer for Inter Milan in a Serie A win over Frosinone.
Today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, suggest that there’s no other candidate after the 26-year-old’s spectacular opening goal.
Inter needed someone to pop up with a moment of real quality after a tough first half against Frosinone yesterday evening.
The Giallazzurri had pushed the Nerazzurri with an organized pressing performance that made it tough for the home side to find their rhythm and generate many chances.
This meant that as the clocked ticked down it looked clear that Inter would head into halftime with the score level.
But wingback Dimarco had other ideas.
The Italian international spotted Frosinone keeper Stefano Turati off his line. And, from barely over the halfway line, Dimarco decided to try and chip the keeper.
It was the most audacious of efforts. And it could barely have come off any better.
Federico Dimarco MOTM For Inter Vs Frosinone
Dimarco’s ball sailing under the crossbar of the Frosinone goal proved to be the difference in a tough first half.
Players like Lautaro Martinez, Marcus Thuram, and Nicolo Barella had huffed and puffed in front of goal.
But no Inter player had managed to beat Turati.
So it took Dimarco doing so from the most improbable of circumstances to unlock the match.
This proved to be the crucial point around which the match turned.
In the second half, Inter came out and won a penalty to double their advantage within a few minutes.
There was a sense of security. Frosinone still put in an aggressive performance to try and fight their way back into the match.
But Inter held out for their eighth clean sheet of the season.
It was a team effort, as it always is with Simone Inzaghi’s Nerazzurri.
But things could have been a lot different without Dimarco’s moment of utter inspiration at the end of the first half.
