Former Inter and Torino forward Aldo Serena weighed in on the Icardi-Belotti debate in an interview with Tuttosport, answering a number of questions on each:
What is more surprising, the fact Belotti has 22 goals or the fact that Icardi has only scored 20?
“Belotti is undoubtedly the surprise. He has grown exponentially after starting so well last year at Torino. As time went on he found belief, more confidence in himself, more composed in front of goals whereas before he was too hectic. When you are young you sometimes face obstacles, but Belotti found the right environment.”
8 of Belotti’s goals have been headers despite him not being all that tall…
It’s true, but he has a great sense of positioning, he always knows how to get away from an opponent when marked. The main rule to scoring with your head is not staying still but to use the natural ability you have to move in the air.”
Icardi also scores often from headers…
“Yes, although he’s still not good with movement in the final third. He must improve this aspect, but he compensates this with a crazy power in his legs, so much so that he often jumps pushing off with both feet.”
Otherwise, where can Icardi improve?
“In a few things. He, like Belotti, has had a remarkable growth. First he lived for the goal, and was not a starter in a team, since he’s been made captain and especially this season, he has been made responsible, he has become a reference, a team player.”
Could they one day play together?
“As a former centre forward who struggled playing with similar strikers, I would say no. They do not have the same characteristics, but they occupy the same space and make the most of two wingers or a complementary partner.”

Look guys,we are lucky to have Icardi.
It should’nt mean that now we put down someone like Belotti just because he is not our player .
I honestly think he is incredibly strong.
AND.. he has an amazing work rate and always gets better at what he does.
But I report the recent words of Paolo Rossi in Italian TV,(Paolo Rossi should know a thing or two about “number 9’s”)..:
” Belotti is my fav player in Serie A this year.
Belotti is so strong he is sometimes scaring me.
I have not seen a new striker that is so strong,so physically overwhelming for the opposite defenses for quite some time now.
Maybe Vieri could be a comparison,but there are no limits to what Belotti can reach and what he can win”
I like how belotti gets away from his marker, but icardi does everything better
Yes,as far as quality ,except for quantity .
God ..does Belotti run and work HARD to try keep Torino in the decent teams column.

But, there is one objection: Belotti is a Milan supporter..
no body wants him at inter and he costs more than icardi and icardi is better rooster is short
Milan doesn’t even have a management or an owner right now,they are deep in confusion right now,with contracts not being renewd for any of their players..forget the money to even consider buying Belotti..

Actually Serena himself played together with Ramon Diaz,in the Trapattoni record’s Inter,so things could be adapted to have two centre forward at times.

We had a SERIOUS ,natural left back then.
We had Vieri and Crespo playng together also and that was not bad at all, but pretty far from optimal.
Pure ,old style 4-4-2 or the more probable and utilized “Eto’o solution”(or Ciccio Graziani, for whomever was following 1982 Italy) Simply ..one goes to the left wing,working on the flank and still finding the space and time for some scoring.
But neither Icardi or Belotti seem to have the Eto’o versatility YET.
( but we don’t know that for sure yet,serious tests should be made first,Belotti is a hard worker who might just be able to do it well)

Mbappe is a perfect offensive left winger to begin with, more than an “in the box” finisher like Belotti or Icardi.
But could Belotti do that? He has, at his best, this almost Ronaldo-like ability to run at defenders full speed. But still I haven’t seen him play live enough to make such judgements… Feels like I almost commited blasphemy comering him to O Fenomeno 😀

Indeed. It’s really strange for them to compare both of them and forgot that, dispite almost the same age as belotti, icardi has been scoring consistently for inter for years now. And Icardi was once serie A’s top scorer along with Luca toni. Belotti might just be one season wonder like igor protti.
Protti was a good box player who would score..and still Bari would lose..and they went in Serie B that year
Belotti ,instead,carries the team when he scores,besides he works like crazy when the team is in tough times.
Torino has one of the worst defense I have ever seen in Serie A,and still..they are in 8th place pretty much only thanks to Belotti.
I just don’t think Belotti could possibly be ” a Protti” at all.

I think he is actually very strong,very solid and he necessarily has a big future.
He is the starting center forward of Italy for a reason,and if you watch Italy-Germany,the last friendly they played,he was the best player for Italy,trying to carry Italy to a win,almost by himself..
Putting German defenders in deep phisical trouble all by himself.
Protti ..never even got summoned for Italy once.
Like i said, might be one season wonder. Prove doubters wrong by performing at the same level again next season.
