Luciano Spalletti appeared on SportItalia broadcast ‘Perfect Match’ and he reflected on his time at Roma amongst other things.
On the Totti situation, Spalletti said: “Fortunately we won yesterday. But how could you party like that with a different result? It would be a disappointment. Thank goodness. I felt the feeling yesterday at the stadium, I remembered what I’d done for a year and a half…at the stadium yesterday. I’m the Coach though, and I have to make my choices. I chose some words to fire the team up. He must be made vice-President. I don’t want to talk for the directors or Pallotta, I’m giving my thoughts.”
Spalletti also discussed his tactics: “I like the 4-2-3-1 but you have to know what you have available to you. You have to be able to estimate the general condition of the team, the quality of players and have to consider other things too, such as the mental condition of the player.”
He concluded revealing his only regret from his time with the Giallorossi: “My greatest regret is to have won the league.”

That Totti decision he had to make in his last game was horrible. They had to win, but Totti should have started for the fans. But, when Totti came in his running was worse than my grandpa´s – would have been really risky to start him. Totti was an absolute legend, always liked him as a player and my eyes got a little wet when I listened to his final speech.
True, but he should have stopped playing like Zanetti when he was at the top. Now he´s 40 years old and hasn’t got enough stamina to play a hole game and – as you said, he´s working rate is really small.
Spalla handled him very well if you asked me: he needed to win and bring Roma to the top and therefor he chosed to give him a minimum of playing time this year.
Actually Spalla showed he has balls when dealing with a true club and country legend – something we really need in a new coach!
Interesting to see if Totti really retires as a player completely. Roma had to pretty much force him to retire and Spalletti was the guy who had to do the dirty work – not a very enviable position.
No I know… but still – Totti is 40 years old; when is enough enough? A top player should always know when to stop and should stop at the top.
4-2-3-1?
😉
Come to inter
Yep, that´s the system the club wants for sure… and picking coaches who plays this way shows the club have an idea of which direction to go with the club. That´s also why I never understood the Conte-thing. Sure he´s a winning coach and has done really well every where, but he´s 3-4-3 playing coach and would require a hole new team to play that way. But Spalla could continue the work started by Mancini, inserting a couple (4-5) quality players and take us to top 2-3 ASAP!
2 years at Roma (or actually only 1 1/2 year) and both years he led them to second behind a monstrous Juventus – very impressive, especially considering he arrived when the team was doing really bad with Garcia
“My greatest regret is to have won the league.”
– don’t worry, you’ll win it next year in Black&Blue
hahaha with both conte and spalletti you won’t get a third place if YOU DO NOT CHANGE THE WHOLE SQUAD
