Just one week after putting real distance between themselves and Juventus, Napoli have the chance to widen the gap with Inter as they host the Nerazzurri in what looks to be a firecracker of a match. Kick-off on Saturday at 20:45 CET.
After last week’s derby heroics, Inter travel south to face top of the table Napoli. While Napoli are riding high on top of the table by themselves, especially after beating Roma away last week, their midweek loss to Manchester City in the Champions League may have both a mental and physical impact on the Partenopei’s disposition.
So confident is Luciano Spaletti of his players that he gave the entire squad two days rest after the memorable victory agaisnt city rivals Milan last Sunday. This is in stark contrast to Napoli’s midweek which entailed a trip to gloomy Manchester where the Partenopei faced Pep Guardiola’s effervescent Manchester City. While all the rhetoric from the Napoli organization pre-match seemed to indicate that they had resigned themselves to returning from England empty-handed, it is still difficult imagine that such a loss will not have some impact on the squad, no matter how mentally resilient. Add the potential loss of star Lorenzo Insigne to injury and one can forgive Napoli for not facing the visitors in the highest of spirits.
Inter, on the other hand, will enter the game in the best of spirits. The Nerazzurri go into the tenth matchday exceeding the most optimistic of expectations and will look at this game as a “nothing to lose” type of affair. Yet despite all things looking peachy-keen in the Inter camp, one must not forget that there are plenty of deficiencies to address in Inter’s approach to matches. The squad is still susceptible to a 40-65 minute mental shutdown which was amply clear against Milan. Inter’s left-back position remains more than a pain in the rear for Spaletti and the Nerazzurri faithful and unless Yuto Nagatomo or Dalbert play a perfect match, expect to Napoli to target Inter’s flank through Callejon’s marauding runs.
While Joao Mario’s potential return to the squad will be a welcome sign for Spaletti, expect the midfield trio of Roberto Gagliardini, Matias Vecino and Borja Valero to start the match, giving the team more of a backbone than if the Portuguese international were to start. Mario will most likely be introduced in the second half as an antidote for either Gagliardini or Valero’s limited gas tank.
The league schedule has so far been kind to Inter, and now they face Napoli in the best of circumstances; riding high on a derby win and with a full week’s rest, will this be enough to break the San Paolo hoodoo?
Team News
It seems unlikely that Marcelo Brozovic will be fit for selection, but Spaletti will look forward to welcoming back Joao Mario after he missed last week’s derby due to tonsillitis.
Probable Inter line-up (subject to change): (4-2-3-1) Handanovic; Dalbert, Miranda, Skriniar, D’Ambrosio; Gagliardini, Vecino; Perisic, Valero, Candreva; Icardi (C)
Stats
Last Season: Napoli 3 – 0 Inter
Last 10 Head to Head: Napoli have had far more impressive results in the two sides’ previous ten encounters, they have five wins to Inter’s two. Even more damning for the Nerazzurri is the fact that they haven’t beaten Napoli in Naples in a league encounter since October 1997.
Keep an Eye on
Mauro Icardi: There has never been more of a man-of-the-moment than Mauro Icardi right now. The derby hero will have all eyes on him as he leads the Nerazzurri from the front. Napoli’s defense will be stuck to Maurito like glue having seen what the striker can do with an iota of a chance.

Prediction & Authors Note
Prediction & scorers: Napoli 2 – Inter with Icardi getting the consolation goal.
Author’s Note: Nobody really expects Inter to go and get all three points from Naples, what will be more important is the manner in which Inter face the hosts and then eventually how they will take the result (win, lose or draw) into the subsequent midweek game against Sampdoria.
Handa our savior
a win or draw is okay for me
Hope vecino feels like playing
One key point in this game is to close gorginho with one of the three forwards, Icardi Perisic or Candreva, freeing the midfield to their definsive duties, preventing a killer pass.
I have a feeling Insigne will play.
He will at least sit in the bench and enter in the second half..he has basically…nothing.
Imagine if Dalbert, Cancelo and Karamoh are here longer… So we could use their + Perišić’s speed to easily compete we their f**** speed on the sides.
But we’re stuck with nagahomo
🙂
so far the crossbar saved us 8 times
hope it continues
Yes, but people easily forget that we also hit the cross bar 5 times.
The bar helping us counts, when it doesn’t it gets forgotten.
i didnt realize that we actually hit the bar 5 times anyway its good
Napoli is high flying in Serie A and it is time to put them down…Spal beat Napoli last year with Roma at home and even better away 1-3 so he knows Sarri and he has a better team now. I am confident in our guys. Inter is coming!
Napoli beat them 2-1 in Rome last year. But besides splitting hair it goes to show that if your team doesn’t play a near perfect game defensively those Napoli buggers will probably beat you, at least against Serie A teams. They just execute their plays so well that if you give them even a little space they’ll punish you immediately.
Santon?
Just saying
Dalbert’s tackle is deadly.
Im sure Nagatomo will play, Everyone loves him. One of the worst signings ever made in Inter history, brought by Marco Branca. An amateur player are surprisngly making any coach choose him over the better players and i wish i knew how he does it. I dont want to be harsch but the only way to replace Nagatomo is if he get injured and i hope does.
He gives all he got and more…he is a fighter and a great guy, thats what I admire even if I cursed him couple of thousand times.
I dont care if hes a great guy. If you want to tell me that he gets into starting eleven because hes a “great guy” and “give his all on the pitch” then thats just absurd and bad excuse. You see other players from our team getting angry on him on the pitch because of his silly mistakes. What matters most is to learn from the mistakes and he never done that. The guy has been here for 7 years and every game he offers nothing, getting his ass wooped by even average players. Sorry but thats not good enough. The guy is not smart and should go start a sushi restaurant instead or go teach some yoga.
Are you retarded? He gives his all at practice and thats why he plays…why else? And what do you know? Like, Spalletti is stupid and you know better? Are you fu..king manager? Piss off!
Giving his all yet he still make mistakes. You’re the one being retarded here. Who do you think you are calling other people retarded? Are you 12? If you are then i suggest you dont come on here because the internet are not for smal kids. Learn to discuss things with manner and respect. I never said i know better than the coach, i just say my opinion because everyone has his own opinion and my opinion is based on facts and if you dont agree then you dont have to be rude and make false assumptions about me or use insults, child. Now fuck off!
Not sure what the surprise is here. Nagatomo is playing because he’s our best LB. Dalbert was given chances and couldn’t convince Spalletti why he should start the games, it’s simple as that.
Our best LB? Are you okay?? He offers nothing to the team, NOTHING. Every game he makes mistakes and forgets to cover areas he should cover like against Benvento for example, and his tackles are average at its best. Dalbert was recently brought here and he should be given more to flourish. His tackles and physicsl attributes are deadlier than Nagatomo. The japanese has been here for 7 years making disastrous performances every game, getting wrecked by even average players like borini who looked like messi and yet he is still here playing. Nagatomo should either be benched or leave the club. He is the worst player ever signed in inter history and dont tell me he is better than dalbert, maybe he got more pace than DLbert but his iq is below -00333.
If Dalbert was better, he is starting. End of story, here. Unless you’re questioning Spalletti’s selection who is 7-1-0 this season, which is a stupid idea also.
Whatever makes you feel better my friend, but my opinion wont change.
That’s fine. All I’m asking for is showing some respect for Spalletti’s selections. He’s been right quite often this season.
My friend, i do respect his decisions but i dont agree with it. But ofcourse i have to accept whatever the starting eleven will be and we’ll see how far we can go with him until the end of the season. Hopefully we can achieve the 3 points tonight.
It’s totally fine to disagree. I don’t understand why you buy Dalbert so much, though. IMO Dalbert has failed to show what he can do for us so far, and Santon ain’t any better than Nagatomo either – leaving Nagatomo the only viable option, unless we play Cancelo as RB and D’Ambrosio as LB.
Agree!
Just no Nagatomo in starting 11, otherwise their wing will eat us alive
The way Man $h*tty hurt Napoli was the fact that they pressed them really high and exposed their D, in the second half against Milan we sat way too much deep, and if we do that against Napoli, it would be ugly. If Spaletti starts aggressive and avoide relying on a piece of crap like Naga$h*t on the left flank, it is possible to beat them.
Exactly
I think our one of not many advantages is no one expect us to win, and no one is going to be mad for losing against Napoli. I’m just worrying if players have got the same thoughts. Maybe we can pull off something crazy.
Spalletti did beat Napoli in Naples last season. I think on paper he knows how to do it again, but the question is can our players execute his plans. We must not let them play those balls behind our d-line and hopefully reduce them just to long shots. Press the ball from them when they start their playmaking from defense/midfield and hit them on counter. I trust Spalletti.
The draw certainly has been kind to us.. This is our toughest game out of the 38 rounds and I’m glad we’re playing it so early when we have the best chance to get 3 points especially after a strenuous week by Napoli..
Honestly Napoli will be focused on Icardi so Candreva and Perisic really need to step up and pull a draw or win here for us.
it is winnable
Forza Inter
Everyone’s watching Icardi…i think the man of the moment would be perisic for this game…they will make sure to keep eyes on icardi…but if you give perisic to much room then you’d be picking the ball out the net everytime.I think Spaletti would allow Napoli to control possession and we’d probably play on the counter..to me Napoli’s defense isn’t all that anyways.Gonna be a great game nevertheless.. Forza inter!!!
You can’t beat a pacy team on counters. What we need is creativity in midfield and a rather cautious game
