Javier Zanetti has praised Luciano Spalletti for the job he has done at Inter this season and believes the Nerazzurri would deserve to secure Champions League qualification.

The Nerazzurri are currently two points behind fourth-placed Lazio with just two rounds left in Serie A, but they will guarantee themselves a place in Europe’s top club competition for the 2018-19 campaign if they win both of their remaining games.

Speaking at the Volvo Studio in the centre of Milan, vice-president Zanetti said that Spalletti deserves credit for the work he has done during the campaign and also hailed Marcelo Brozovic’s upturn in form in recent weeks.

“He’s been able to create a united group with functional players,” he said. “He, his staff and the guys deserve to make the Champions League. They’re doing an excellent job despite the tough moment that we went through.

“Brozovic has recovered like a great player after having some difficulties and it’s not easy to get back to the level he is at now. We’re happy that he can express himself, it’s benefiting the team.”

Zanetti also touched upon Inter’s controversial defeat at home to Juventus on 28 April, suggesting that it was not the first time they have been unfairly penalised in matches against the Bianconeri.

“We played a great game against a great team. Unfortunately, once again there were individual episodes which hurt us. Football moves on, we can’t do anything. It’s pointless to get hung up on it if everything moves on.”
