Former Inter goalkeeper Gianluca Pagliuca has revealed his preference to take charge of Inter should Luciano Spalletti be removed from his position due to Inter’s recent poor run.

“2019 started off badly for Inter but I hope that from next Saturday against Parma Inter will [get back on track] and continue their journey towards a much more important season. While they are in third place, they risk being sucked in by the others but I hope to see the Nerazzurri finish in the Champions League places,” he said in an interview with Radio Anch’io Lo Sport.

Pagliuca proceeded to discuss his own experience of being at Inter when Inter are in crisis mode and Spalletti’s future at the club.

“You need to work, try not to listen to the television and read fewer newspapers. They need results and with Spalletti and his experience they will come out of it. Inter are still in a good position in the league and a great coach in Spalletti and champion in Icardi must help get the club out of this period. Of course the future of the coach does not look rosy. He still has a contract but Conte’s shadow is there over him. I think Conte is the right coach for Inter and I say that I hope he goes on to coach Inter but I also hope that Spalletti remains in charge for as long as possible.”

Next he spoke on Mauro Icardi who is going through a goal drought.

“When Icardi does not score, the fans always blame him and the contract he has. He always scores 15/20 goals a season but this is a moment that he needs to get by. The contract thing is obviously not viewed positively by the fans. He has already stated he is happy to stay at Inter but if he said he wanted to leave things would be different. He wants an increase and he will get it.”

He concluded the interview by sharing which of Inter’s Samir Handanovic and Milan’s Gigi Donnarumma he prefers.

“Between Donnarumma and Handanovic I would choose Donnarumma because he is younger but Handanovic is very strong, and yesterday he did very well.”
