In his weekly column for Corriere della Sera, journalist Mario Sconcerti has attempted to work out what is behind Inter’s current crisis on the pitch and believes that many of their problems originate from the midfield.

“Inter are lacking in the final third. I think Inter ask too much of their trequartista(s). So many have failed in that position in the past three years (Borja Valero, Ljajic, Jovetic, partly Rafinha, Joao Mario, Nainggolan, Guarin, Kondogbia and Brozovic who was forced to drop back). They are all important players but none of them have been decisive even under different managers. If one of the midfielders goes forward to assist it leaves the other one having to cover even more ground.”

Sconcerti believes that Inter’s problems are not limited to central midfield either and continued to discuss the wings.

“The wings are another constant problem for Inter. It is not their job to squeeze in with the others in midfield but to beat their man and put crosses in for Mauro Icardi. In substance, Inter’s embarrassment, is not being able to adapt to the strikers.”

He concluded his column by coming to the defence of Inter manager Luciano Spalletti who has been subjected to a lot of flak lately.

“Spalletti is in a world of trouble which has been caused by the club that have not built a proper squad.”
