Lautaro Martinez and Samir Handanovic were able to rise above the ongoing chaos surrounding Mauro Icardi as Inter ran out 1-0 winners away to Rapid Vienna in the Europa League last night, Gazzetta dello Sport believe.
Granted a rare start in the absence of his countryman, Lautaro – who remains Icardi’s ‘substitute’ rather than ‘heir’ -would prove to be the match-winner for the travelling Nerazzurri. Minutes before the end of the first half he won the penalty before duly smashing it in to the back of the net to put Inter ahead in the two-legged tie and one foot in the next round.
As for Handanovic, who has replaced Icardi at the Nerazzurri captain, he made a fantastic double save on Rapid’s Christoph Knasmullner, in what was the hosting side’s best opportunity of the night.
The Milan based newspaper go on to state, “the script was followed like clockwork for a 1-0 victory that should end doubts surrounding qualification but one that still leaves other issues open.”
