Beppe Bergomi today backed Inter and Milan’s plan to demolish San Siro and build a new stadium in its place on the same land.
Both clubs will need permission from the city council before any building work can begin, but mayor Giuseppe Sala does not want the ground to be touched until after the 2026 Winter Olympics.
Bergomi admitted it would be difficult to say goodbye to a stadium as prestigious as San Siro but insisted it was in the Nerazzurri’s best interests.
“You get used to everything in life eventually,” the ex-defender told Sky Sport.
“Teams need modern stadiums these days, Juventus have proven that with the Allianz Stadium.
“San Siro has given us some unique emotions over the years but we have to look to the future.”
The 1982 World Cup winner also discussed Inter’s dealings in the transfer market, with a surprising revelation about new boss Antonio Conte.
“I know Conte likes Inter’s current squad and he’ll make sure everyone performs to their best,” Bergomi said.
“He didn’t have much talent when he coached Italy but he made sure they had a great collective. It’s obvious he’ll want to sign certain players, though.
“Edin Dzeko and Romelu Lukaku would help facilitate forward runs from Inter’s midfielders but it looks like Inter will sign Stefano Sensi and Nicolo Barella as well.”
