Roma’s new head coach Paulo Fonseca today told reporters Edin Dzeko cannot stay at the club if he is not motivated.

Inter have been in talks with the Giallorossi to sign the Bosnian for several weeks, but the clubs are nowhere near an agreement at present.

Fonseca said he had not spoken to the 33-year-old yet but assured he did not want Dzeko if his head was not in the right place.

“I only want players who are happy to be here and ready to fight for this club,” Fonseca said.

“I want players who are dedicated to the cause and determined to pursue our objectives. This is a prerequisite for me.”

Dzeko agreed personal terms with the Nerazzurri last month but was forced to turn up for Roma’s preseason training today.

Antonio Conte had hoped to sign Dzeko and Romelu Lukaku before this week but he will be forced to work with Mauro Icardi for now.
