Gazzetta dello Sport are of the belief that Inter’s backline of Diego Godin, Stefan de Vrij and Milan Skriniar can ‘compete with the best in the world’ even though the trio are yet to ever play altogether.

“The defence was the cornerstone of the construction of Antonio Conte’s team. It is the biggest strength of this Inter side but the trio are yet to play together. Godin, de Vrij and Skriniar are a trio who can legitimately compete with the best in the world,” the report begins.

The launch of GDS, as Gazzetta have named the trio, has been postponed due to both Godin and de Vrij suffering injuries meaning the trio have not even played so much as a friendly match together yet.

In the first two days of the league campaign have deployed a defensive trio of D’Ambrosio on the right, Skriniar on the left and Ranocchia in the middle with Ranocchia already putting together more than three times the minutes he managed in the league last season.

The report goes on to conclude: “The match with Udinese could be the first chance to see the trio of GDS together on the pitch, even if the real goal is the debut in the Champions League on the 17th and the Milan derby.”
