Inter defender Stefan De Vrij was excluded from the Netherlands squad in their Euro 2020 qualifier against Northern Ireland yesterday due to a slight muscle strain, according to a report from Italian broadcaster SportMediaset.

The report details how coach Ronald Koeman decided to drop him from the squad due to the injury concern, although De Vrij has appeared for Netherlands in over a year now. Furthermore, the Dutch national team sent a private message to the Nerazzurri’s medical staff, informing them that the injury isn’t serious and that he won’t play against Estonia next week either. Following the Euro 2020 qualifying match against Estonia, the 27-year-old Dutchman will return to Inter’s training ground in Appiano.

De Vrij, despite being one of the most consistent defenders in Italy so far this season, has struggled to earn international caps with the Dutch national team. He hasn’t made a single appearance for the Oranje in 2019, having last appeared against Belgium in a friendly over a year ago.
