Dries Mertens will not renew his contract with Napoli and could leave the club in the January transfer window according to a report from Milan based news outlet Gazzetta dello Sport.

The Belgian attacker’s current deal with the struggling Partenopei is due to expire at the end of this season and therefore from January 1 onward he can agree a pre-contract with other teams.

Even if Mertens wanted to renew his contract with the club, who he has represented since 2013, he would be unable to with club president and owner Aurelio De Laurentiis already deciding that he does not see the 32-year-old as part of the club’s project going forward.

Inter and several Chinese clubs have seemingly taken an interest in the former PSV Eindhoven man who has made 21 appearances across all competitions this season. In 1411 minutes on the park, he has scored nine goals and provided four assists for his teammates.
