Italian prime minister Giuseppe Conte has confirmed it has not been discussed whether or not some of the funds put aside to help deal with the Coronavirus crisis will be used to help sports.

A total of €25 billion has been set aside to help deal with the virus, of which there is over 10,000 confirmed cases in the country, which makes it the second most affected nation worldwide behind China, where the virus started out.

Football in particular has been significantly impacted by the virus with several games having been postponed in recent weeks and many others being played behind closed doors.

The latest Italian government decree has also put a ban on sporting events taking place whatsoever until at least April 3, with the only exceptions being internationally organised matches or tournaments such as the Champions League and Europa League.

“Our last decree concerns our leagues, football and competitive competitions. We have allowed the athletes to continue training. We have not talked about it [giving money to sports to help out], we will evaluate what we have to do,” Conte remarked during a press conference that took place earlier on today.
