UEFA have told their member federations that the Champions League and Europa League will take precedence over domestic competitions according to a report in today’s print edition of La Repubblica.
European football’s governing body pushed the final’s of both tournaments back to the end of June due to the current extraordinary circumstances and given their stance, things could get particularly complicated in Italy.
Italy currently has enough teams left in each tournament that could mean both tournaments finals could be contested by only Italian clubs and this would make finishing Serie A by the end of June very difficult.
The member federations are understood to have committed to finishing the season by June 30 at the latest but if Italian clubs progress in European competition, there will be no dates for all games to be fulfilled by that date.
UEFA are also strongly against the idea of leagues being decided by playoffs and the report goes on to state that this might mean that the league just needs to be kept as is and there will be no title handed out nor will there be any relegation.
The top two Serie B clubs will not be stopped from coming up thus meaning Serie A could have a 22 team league next term.
