Damiano Tommasi, the president of the Italian players association (AIC), has refused to rule out the possibility of players having to help out amid the ongoing global Coronavirus crisis.
A number of reports in the Italian media in the past few days have suggested that clubs could try and seek assistance in paying players wages due to the lack of revenue coming in due to their being no matches played at the moment and some reports have even suggested that players may need to take temporary pay cuts too.
Tommasi, who is perhaps best known from his playing days at Roma between 1996 and 2006, spoke with Italian news agency ANSA on measures that may or may not be taken to try and limit the financial impact on football.
“The theme of the sustainability of the football system during and after this global crisis is obviously a subject of extreme interest for all those who live in this system, including footballers,” he said. “For this reason we must evaluate everything.”
He then went on to admit that several things will determine what role the players will have to play in all of this: “Loss of revenue, postponement of competitions, cancellation of events, government contributions, federal aid and support from international institutions will tell us what the role of the players will be.”
