Inter defender Stefan de Vrij discussed the Nerazzurri’s disappointing 2-2 draw against Roma earlier tonight in an interview with Italian broadcaster InterTV after the game.
“It’s nice to hear these nice words from the coach, the important thing is that there is the desire, the work, on many aspects we can still go a long way and we will try to do that. I think we may have made a mistake with our possession, we’ve lost balls that used to be dangerous. There’s still a long way to go.”
The 28-year-old Dutchman didn’t pay much attention to his goal statistics. He scored the opening goal in the game against the Giallorossi after heading home a cross provided by Alexis Sanchez.
“I don’t look at them, I try to help the team where I can. I’m disappointed with the result because we didn’t manage to win the game and we’re very sorry about that.”
Finally, De Vrij spoke about Roma’s first goal, that tied up the game just before half time.
“We’re disappointed as a team, especially as defenders. We’ve been paying a lot for our mistakes lately and we’re very sorry about that.”
The 28-year-old Dutchman, who is contracted to the Milanese club until 2023, has made 38 appearances across all competitions so far this season, for a total of 3253 minutes.
He has been a core part of coach Antonio Conte’s squad. De Vrij has scored three goals, provided four assists and helped the side keep nine clean sheets so far this season, across all competitions.
Inter are currently second in the league table, and are now five points behind rivals and league leaders Juventus, who will play Lazio tomorrow evening.
A win for the Roman club is crucial for Inter, as a Juventus win would see the Turin based club’s cushion above second grow to eight points, an essentially insurmountable lead considering that only four games remain. Inter’s next game is against Fiorentina on Wednesday night.
