Former Inter defender Zinho Vanheusden discussed the Nerazzurri’s interest in re-signing him and his decision to stay with Belgian side Standard Liege in an interview with Belgian media outlet Het Nieuwsblad earlier today.
“There were many talks with Inter, they wanted me to return but I just wanted to play. Then we’ll see.”
The 21-year-old centre back then touched on how he wanted to stay with Standard, despite the offers that arrived.
“Leaving now? In my head it wasn’t like that at all. My agent always gets offers, but I absolutely wanted to stay. For me it is very nice to play at Standard again.”
He highlighted how he felt no need to leave the club due to his happiness with Standard.
“I am still young. I would like to start by saying that in football you never know what will happen tomorrow, but I feel very good here. I see no reason why I should play elsewhere now.”
Finally, Vanheusden commented on how he still has unfinished business in Belgium.
“I still have a lot to learn in Belgium. I want to stay here, I have the feeling that I am not finished here.”
The 21-year-old defender joined Standard Liege when he was nine years old, leaving for the Nerazzurri’s youth set up in 2015, aged 16.
Vanheusden was sent back to the Belgian club on loan in the 2018/19 season, before re-signing for them last summer on a contract lasting until 2023.
The player made 28 appearances across all competitions last season, for a total of 2334 minutes. In that time, he scored twice and helped the side keep eight clean sheets.
Vanheusden was made captain of the club despite his young age, wearing the armband on multiple occasions last season.
