Inter striker Lautaro Martinez discussed the Nerazzurri’s exciting 4-3 season opener against Fiorentina earlier this evening in an interview with Italian broadcaster InterTV after the game.

“First of all, we are happy because we started the season. We had a good match against a team that is good on a counter attack and works the ball to goal immediately.

“We showed willingness and determination, we conceded three goals that we could have avoided. But we are happy.”

The 23-year-old Argentine striker, who has long been targeted by European giants Barcelona, then commented on how his last three goals have come from outside the penalty area.

“These are things I practice in during training, I’m happy because what we do there we then have to do on the pitch. The important thing is that Inter win and that the fans are happy.”

Finally, Lautaro touched on the team’s increased depth with the new signings and how the five substitution rule allows the Nerazzurri to take advantage of their new found squad depth.

“That’s how it is, we have to take advantage of the five subs because the match is played with intensity and so those subbed in make a difference with their freshness. Whoever starts on the bench has to do the same as those who start.”

Coach Antonio Conte has started his second season in charge of the Milanese club with an important three points against a hungry Fiorentina side, who held the club to two draws last season.

Inter’s next game is against Benevento on Wednesday evening, before facing fellow title contenders Lazio next weekend.

Lautaro, who is contracted to the Nerazzurri until 2023, is likely to negotiate a new contract with the club, after a potential move to Barcelona failed to appear.
