Inter will not sign a new midfielder to replace Radja Nainggolan once the Belgian has rejoined Cagliari, according to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport this morning.

Nainggolan is closing on a return to Sardinia with the clubs in talks over a deal that will see Inter receive €12 million and two academy players.

Inter’s hopes of signing Ngolo Kante have all but faded and Nainggolan’s departure will not make them more likely to secure a deal with Chelsea.

Arturo Vidal’s arrival from Barcelona, along with news that talks with Napoli to sell Matias Vecino have stalled, mean the Nerazzurri have enough options in midfield already.

Sky also confirmed that Inter are back in contention to sign Kante’s Chelsea teammate Marcos Alonso, who is no longer part of Frank Lampard’s plans for this season.

Juventus are also interested in the 29-year-old as a potential replacement for Mattia De Sciglio, should the Italian depart before Monday’s transfer deadline.
