Lega Serie A and the Italian football federation, FIGC, are weighing up two possibilities in the event that the Serie A season needs to be stopped according to a report in today’s print edition of Italian daily newspaper Corriere dello Sport.

In March this year the 2019/20 season had to be put on hold due to the global Coronavirus pandemic and although the season then resumed and concluded and this season has started, the pandemic is still present and Lega Serie A and FIGC are examining routes they could go down in the event that the 2020/21 season needs to be stopped.

The first idea is to go down the route of playoffs. The 20 Serie A teams would be split into groups, one of teams in Champions League places, one of teams in Europa League places, one of teams in midtable and one of team in the final few places in the table.

The second idea is to have a final eight tournament, something UEFA adopted to conclude last season’s Champions League and Europa League. The idea of a final eight would only be feasible if the season is to be stopped in February or March.
