Inter striker Romelu Lukaku has reflected on last season’s match between Cagliari and Inter, in which he was subject to racism from a portion of Cagliari supporters and has admitted in the moment he was unaware that he had been subjected to racism.
“During the penalty kick I didn’t realise it, but then watching the video…In addition there was also an article about me and Smalling that annoyed me. These events, even if indirectly, can still influence you,” he explained in an interview with Belgian state broadcaster Rtbf, which was broadcast a short time ago.
The 27-year-old, who has been absolutely prolific since joining Inter in the Summer of 2019 in a club record €65 million deal from Manchester United then spoke on what needs to be done to combat racism.
“This can also happen in Belgium, despite being a country open to diversity. Here in the national team we are a team of different origins and we are proud of it.
“We need to act with competent people in this area to combat the phenomenon of racism, I also talked about it with the federation not too long ago.
“Our pride in representing Belgium in diversity must also be reflected in the stadiums, and this is a task that the federation must perform.”
In just over a year with Inter, the former West Bromwich Albion striker has made 54 appearances across all competitions, in which he has scored a sensational 37 goals and provided six assists for his teammates.
This season Lukaku has been an ever present feature in the Inter team with him appearing in all three of the club’s matches to date. He has scored three goals when on the park.
