Inter striker Lautaro Martinez has clarified that his angry moment upon his substitution against Genoa on Saturday was not aimed at neither manager Antonio Conte nor his teammates and was down to the fact he was simply unhappy with his performance.
“Anger and determination are always things that I always keep inside of me, that I always carry with me,” he explained in an interview with Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, which was broadcast a short time ago.
“I always try to improve myself and give my best for Inter, but in that match I didn’t do it and I was angry with myself. I didn’t do it out of anger for being substituted, or being angry with the coach or with my teammates, only for myself because I didn’t give what I wanted to give.”
He then looked ahead to tomorrow evening’s Champions League group stage match away to Ukrainian giants Shakhtar Donetsk.
“Tomorrow is a very important match for us because they have won their opening game, they are strong and they play well with the ball. We have worked hard in these days, we have recovered and there is no excuses. We have to go out and win.”
He then reminisced about Inter’s resounding 5-0 triumph over tomorrow’s opponents in last season’s Europa League semi final, in which he scored a brace.
“In that match we did almost everything well, both in defence and in attack, with and without the ball. We scored five goals, it wasn’t easy in a semi final. It was a good match, we hope to do tomorrow what we did in August.”
Lautaro joined Inter back in the Summer of 2018 from Superliga Argentina side Racing Club and is contracted to Inter until the end of the 2022/23 season.
He has since made 90 appearances across all competitions to date for the Nerazzurri, in which he has scored 33 goals and tallied nine assists.
