Lautaro Martinez’s current release clause could remain as part of a new contract according to a report in today’s print edition of Italian daily newspaper Tuttosport.

The highly rated 23-year-old striker is currently under contract until 2023 but his contract should be adjusted by Christmas.

His representatives would like his salary to be brought in line with those of highest earners Romelu Lukaku, Christian Eriksen and Alexis Sanchez but Inter are thinking of offering €5 million plus add-ons to him.

He has a €111 million release clause in his current deal and this could well stay in a new deal because if it were to be activated, it will still give Inter a substantial capital gain.

The report from the Turin based news outlet goes on to explain that the door to a future sale to Barcelona remains open.

Barcelona courted him strongly during the Summer transfer window but a move ultimately never came to fruition. Inter sought €150 million, €39 million more than the release clause, although this would have been offset by the inclusion of counterparts. Due to COVID-19 though, such a move did not take place.
