Former Santos manager Dorival Junior has expressed his thoughts on why Gabriel ‘Gabigol’ Barbosa’s stint with Inter went as poorly as it did.
Gabigol joined Inter in a circa €30 million deal from Santos in the Summer of 2016 as one of then new owners Suning’s first purchases.
He arrived at the club regarded as one of the best Brazilian youngsters on the planet but was very seldom given the opportunity to show off his ability in an Inter shirt.
Gabigol was sent out on loan to Benfica in his second year with Inter where he barely played and was then loaned out to Flamengo where he found his scoring boots again and got his career back on track which resulted in them purchasing him outright from Inter.
“Inter were very unstable. When you arrive at a new home, experiencing difficulty is natural. It was a very different environment than what he had at Santos,” Junior explained in an interview with the Brazilian edition of Goal.com.
Junior went on to point out that Gabigol was not the only player to arrive that struggled at the Nerazzuri at that time.
“Other players also arrived at Inter and did not establish themselves. Here in Brazil he doesn’t need to show anything anymore. Just confirm what he has already done.”
In conclusion he shared some more reasons why he thinks the 24-year-old failed at the Nerazzurri.
“In Europe he never had a chance to play. At no point did he have the confidence of the coaches like he does here because all the coaches here are well aware of his potential.”
Gabigol, who has represented the Brazilian national team on five separate occasions, made just 10 appearances across all competitions during his time with Inter, in which he scored a single goal.
