Inter coach Antonio Conte discussed the Nerazzurri’s rewarding 3-1 win over Cagliari earlier today in an interview with Italian broadcaster Inter TV after the game.
“The value that these three points have is that they make us climb in the league table. The fourth consecutive win in the league, coming after a painful football game against Shakhtar Donetsk.
“It was not easy to raise the mood of the players. They did very well because these are moments where the less said the better. I told them to leave the talking to others and talk on the pitch.”
The 51-year-old Italian coach commented on how he changed the team’s formation during the game and if that was in relation to the compactness he mentioned in the press conference yesterday.
“I asked for compactness on the outside, not on the inside. Inside, we are very compact and united. We know what situations we have to face, we are Inter.
“I asked for compactness outside because I saw a lot of negativity around and I was very sorry because there are people here who are giving so much for this club. There is maximum commitment, we live for this.
“We started the game one way, we changed to try to be less balanced and more offensive. At the same time, we were also lucky, in a couple of moments they counter attacked and were not able to take advantage of numerical superiority in the offensive phase at 1-0.
“In those circumstances you have to give more possibilities from the bench.”
Finally, Conte spoke about how Inter are the second team in Europe in regards to points earnt from a disadvantage and if he was proud of that.
“If I look at the statistics, I find a lot. This is a team that has scored the most goals in Serie A.
“The fact that we have come back more, scoring more points in comebacks is a positive aspect, it shows that this is a team that has character that doesn’t give up when faced with negative situations like today when we dominated a game and created a lot but found ourselves down by a goal.
“So, credit to the guys who have this spirit.”
The Nerazzurri’s 3-1 win against the Rossoblu earlier today was important as the squad needed to show a strong response after their incredibly disappointing early elimination from the Champions League earlier this week.
The 0-0 draw with Ukrainian champions Shakhtar Donetsk left the Milanese club bottom of their Champions League group after six games, sitting on six points.
Inter’s next game is against Gennaro Gattuso’s Napoli on Wednesday next week, an important match considering the position of both teams in the Serie A table.
