Legendary Inter central midfielder Lothar Matthaus has admitted that he sees similarities between the way he played and current Inter midfielder Nicolo Barella, who he believes has great potential, plays.

Barella joined Inter in the Summer of 2019 from fellow Serie A side Cagliari and he has been one of Inter’s best performing players in the time since. The Italian national team player has went from strength to strength and he is seen as one of the best young midfielders around at this moment.

“There are similarities, it’s true. Barella is 23 years old, he is still young, he is at Inter and is joined by Vidal, Brozovic and Gagliardini,” 1990 World Cup winner Matthaus explained in an interview with France Football, as quoted by Italian news outlet FCInterNews.it.

Matthaus then went on to add: “He is certainly on the right track. He is a not only a strong player, but one who also works a lot. He has great potential, he perfectly understood the responsibilities that a modern central midfielder has.”

Matthaus joined Inter 1988 from Bayern Munich and he spent the next four years with the club before returning to the Bavarian club.

During his spell with the Nerazzurri, the former Bulgaria national team manager, made 154 appearances across all competitions, in which he scored 53 goals and tallied eight assists.
