Antonio Conte should consider using a four-man defence more often at Inter, at least if a report in Italy’s media on Thursday is anything to go by.

The Nerazzurri came from behind to secure a dramatic 2-1 win over AC Milan in the Coppa Italia quarter-finals on Tuesday, after Conte changed system to use a 4-3-1-2 formation in the second half.

As Tuttosport’s print edition pointed out, this is the third time this season that Inter have turned defeat into victory after switching to a back four.

In the first match of the season at home to Fiorentina, Inter changed to a back four and went from 3-2 down to 4-3 winners by the end of the match at the San Siro.

Then away to Cagliari in December, a few days after the 0-0 draw with Shakhtar Donetsk that knocked them out of the Champions League, Inter came from a goal down to win 3-1 with all of three goals coming after the change to a back four.

The Turin-based publication’s conclusion was that whenever Inter change to a back four when trailing, it means they will make a comeback in the game.

It remains up for debate, however, just how much those three comebacks were inspired by the tactical swap or whether it was mere coincidence.
