After being handed a rare opportunity to start, Christian Eriksen made the most of his chance as he played an instrumental role in Inter’s 4-0 win over Benevento.
The Denmark international has struggled for form and minutes under coach Antonio Conte since joining from Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur one year ago, but stood out at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza yesterday.
Setting Inter up for victory after his early freekick forced Riccardo Improta to turn into his own net, Eriksen took on a deeper midfield role in place of Marcelo Brozovic and was comfortable on the ball, whilst also rattling the crossbar from range.
As reported in today’s newspaper edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport, Eriksen’s stats from the match were impressive and met the expectations of Conte as he experimented with dropping the Dane deeper.
Eriksen played 130 passes throughout the match, surpassing Brozovic’s 94 against Udinese last weekend, whilst 100 of his 111 forward moves were successful.
Meanwhile, the 28-year-old recovered the ball nine times and had two efforts on goal, with his only blot being losing possession 22 times.
