The decision to use Christian Eriksen in a deeper midfield role in Inter’s 4-0 win over Benevento was vindicated by a fine performance, Italian media claim.

Having struggled for form since his move from Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur last January, the Denmark international enjoyed one of his best performances against the newly promoted club.

An early freekick forced an own goal from Riccardo Improta, whilst Eriksen also hit the crossbar and showcased his range of passing from deep at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza in Serie A.

As reported in today’s newspaper edition of La Stampa, coach Antonio Conte’s decision to utilise Eriksen in that role in place of Marcelo Brozovic was rewarded with an excellent display and helped Inter maintain their two point gap below leaders AC Milan.

“He came into the match as a special observer but soon found himself at the centre of everything,” La Stampa said of Eriksen after the victory.

“His switching of the play and movement of the ball unlocked [Benevento coach Filippo] Inzaghi’s five man defence and after forcing the early own goal, Eriksen kept pushing for more.”

Eriksen has scored five goals in 42 appearances for Inter since his arrival for Spurs, with his most recent goal coming in the last minutes of the Coppa Italia Quarter-Final clash against AC Milan in midweek to seal a 2-1 victory.
