Inter do not have history on their side for their Coppa Italia semi-final against Juventus, a report in the Italian media warned today.
As per Corriere della Sera’s print edition, the Nerazzurri have lost all four of their ties against their arch rivals at this stage, with the most recent elimination coming in 2016 when Juventus won on penalties despite losing 3-0 at San Siro.
The Bianconeri also came out on top of their two-legged clash in 2004, again on penalties at San Siro with Antonio Conte among their substitutes, as well as in 1983 and way back in 1938, which was a one-off match.
Inter will also be aiming tonight to beat Juventus in two consecutive matches for the first time in 11 years, when Jose Mourinho oversaw back-to-back wins during their historic 2009-10 treble-winning campaign.
The Milanese publication argued tonight’s first leg at San Siro represented a ‘stress test’ for Inter, who face an extremely tough run of matches in February with Fiorentina, Lazio and AC Milan all coming up in Serie A, on top of next week’s second leg in Turin.
Conte’s side must find a way to fight their way through their difficult run of games, before speeding up their Scudetto bid in March when the fixture list is softer.
Inter will also have the advantage of not being in Europe from next month onwards, unlike all of their rivals at the top of the table.
