Aleksandar Kolarov has played a bigger role in Inter’s Serie A title charge than most assumed, according to a report in the Italian media today.
Gazzetta dello Sport’s print edition said everyone at Appiano Gentile recognised that the defender was playing a ‘fundamental’ role in the Nerazzurri’s dressing room.
Kolarov has not featured in Serie A for Inter since the 2-2 draw at his former club Roma on January 10, having made just 11 appearances in total across all competitions.
However, the Serbian is making himself very useful all the same by transferring his experience and motivation to Inter’s less experienced and decorated players.
As far as on-pitch matters were concerned, the Milan-based paper explained that Antonio Conte’s side were an ideal marriage between Conte’s DNA and the Nerazzurri’s own traditional values.
Samir Handanovic has helped restore Inter’s defence to its rock-solid best, while the midfield is combining defensive application with quality with Christian Eriksen gaining an increasingly important role.
Romelu Lukaku and Lautaro Martinez are envied by every other club in Europe, with Inter’s past travails concerning Mauro Icardi all but a distant memory.
Alexis Sanchez is struggling for game time thanks to the pair’s devastating form, but even the Chilean is keeping his spirits up, as shown by his congratulatory post on social media yesterday following the 2-1 win over Sassuolo.
