Inter defender Stefan de Vrij does not feel that his team got the result that they came for after a goalless draw with Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League yesterday.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster SportMediaset, the 29-year-old stated that the team were not happy that they failed to win in a tough match where a draw was a fair result.

Inter were not at their best against Roberto De Zerbi’s Shakhtar side, with the Ukrainians allowed to control possession for lengthy spells and the Nerazzurri at times unable to really impose themselves on the match.

In the end, neither side found the back of the net from a few clear chances, and both took their first point of the group stage campaign.

The Nerazzurri are now off and running in the group, but will have to do better in their remaining matches if they wish to avoid exiting the competition from the group stage for the fourth consecutive years, having failed to really convince against Shakhtar.

“We can’t be happy with the result,” de Vrij said, “we came here to win and we didn’t. They played well, we both had chances. I think the draw is correct given the match, but we’re not happy. We struggled to keep up with them and they often played out of our pressure.”

He went on, “They played very well, it wasn’t easy. We have to analyze the game and move on. I thought my header would go in, but it was saved. It would have been nice to win here, we didn’t. The group is open, now we have to start winning in the Champions League.”
