Legendary former AC Milan defender Alessandro Costacurta believes that Samir Handanovic was one of the vital players for Inter in yesterday’s 2-1 defeat of Sassuolo at the Mapei Stadium.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, the former defender gave the view that the Nerazzurri captain’s saves were of great importance in allowing his team to take home three points from Emilia-Romagna.

Handanovic had an eventful evening, with one of the major talking points from the match being his challenge on Sassuolo forward Gregoire Defrel for which a red card should have been given in the view of the some.

However, this incident was far from the only major action which the Slovenian saw, as he answered his critics at times with important saves to keep his team from conceding more than the solitary goal that they did in a difficult first half.

On how the Slovenian looks to have put tough errors behind him Costacurta said, “At that moment it wasn’t difficult to make mistakes because Inter were suffering a lot. Handanovic made a great save, at that moment Inter seemed to change. The substitutes entered with the right mindset.”

Costacurta also had words for Nerazzurri defender Federico Dimarco, who he stated “Can play safely for this team. At Inter, few have his qualities on the left.”
