Inter Legend Beppe Bergomi: “Players Fall To The Ground Too Easily, It Is The Referee Who Should Intervene”

Legendary former Inter defender Beppe Bergomi believes that modern players go to the ground too easily and expect play to be stopped.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia about the circumstances of Lazio’s second goal against Inter on Saturday, the Nerazzurri legend suggested that only the referee should be able to stop play and that players should make sure to get up and resume playing as soon as they possibly can.

Inter fell to defeat at the Stadio Olimpico with Biancocelesti’s second-half goal proving decisive in condemning them to their first Serie A defeat of the season.

However, the Nerazzurri players were visibly upset after the goal on the basis that Anderson had carried the ball past Inter defender Federico Dimarco on the fast counter-attack, with the Inter man on the ground recovering from a heavy challenge.

In Bergomi’s view, however, there was no problem with this goal, and the protestations illustrate that players expect too much when they are on the ground.

“In general, players remain on the ground too easily,” the former defender opined. “Then, it is necessary to understand the results that determine different actions – at 0-0 or with a lead, you put the ball out easily. For me, the players must stay on the ground as little as possible and above all it must be the referee who intervenes.”
