Milan legend Alessandro Costacurta, now an expert on Sky Sport, revealed what Javier Zanetti told him about when he’ll retire as a footballer: “Pupi told me that he wants to play longer than I did. I retired when I was 41 years and 3 months, he is 40 years and 2 months, so there is not much missing. If so, it will mean that he’ll return from injury in good condition.”
Alessandro Costacurta has the record as the oldest outfield player who played in Serie A. In front of him he has four goalkeepers (Balotta, Antonioli, Fontana and Zoff). Costacurta was 41 years and 25 days old when he played his last game on May 19, 2007.
Zanetti is the oldest player still active in Serie A. When he was injured in that fateful game against Palermo, the captain was 39 years and 261 days old, giving him a 14th place on the list. During the current season, Zanetti could at best climb to 8th on the list.
